The Tradition of Auspicious Light
Light offerings hold a central place in Buddhist devotional practice across all traditions. In True Buddha School, offering Auspicious Lights (吉祥灯) before the altar of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas is a profound act of worship that symbolizes the illumination of wisdom dispelling the darkness of ignorance and suffering. The merit generated through light offerings is considered exceptionally powerful and far-reaching.
Symbolism and Meaning
The flame of a lamp represents the light of the dharma — timeless, pure, and capable of cutting through the darkness of delusion. When a devotee offers light to the Buddhas, they simultaneously cultivate generosity (dana), reverence, and the aspiration for enlightenment. The brightness of the offering reflects back as clarity and brightness in the devotee's own life circumstances.
